Writer Envy
I'm sure everyone who has any access to any form of the media has heard of the movie and book series Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I want to be like her. Yes, I've considered trying to write a young adult story. No, not a vampire series because I'm not inclined to write about vampires or werewolves. I do have an idea, maybe gearing my fantasy (the one I've wanted to write forever and started a while... a loooooong while ago.) toward a young adult audience. Hey, looks like there's a market, right? So why not?

My 12 year old started, and finished reading Twilight and I've never seen her so starry eyed. She talks non-stop about Edward, she's reread favorite chapters, she has his pictures on her wall. I think I was that way about John Schneider (of Dukes of Hazard fame) and Dirk Benedict (from his Starbuck-the original Starbuck days). She gave me the book to read. I was iffy about it, after all, I'm in my 40's, I tend to gravitate toward love stories about adults, but I heard good things about it, that it brought out the inner teenager of many a woman. I'm all for that.

Last night we went to see the movie and I gotta say, it was awesome! Oh, young love. One of my favorite talk radio hosts, who had to see the movie with his tweenage daughter, said it well (and I paraphrase): "He was really really in love with her but he really really wanted to eat her. That's gotta be tough." MG said it better.

So I stayed up and read a little more last night. I want to see what it is that makes everyone crazy for these stories (because there's, what 4 of them now?). The writing is good, but it isn't absolutely fantastic (with all due respect to the author). I'm not far enough into the story yet, but she's got a nice style about her. It's not fluffy or florid. Just clean writing.

A coworker came up to me yesterday and told me she was hearing an interview with Stephanie Meyer and thought of me. This is a woman who's a mother of, I think, three who had a vivid dream and, with a baby on her hip, started writing it down. And voila, Twilight. And on and on and on.

So, moral here.... stop making excuses! I've been doing this for 20 years and she did it in 4 months.

I want to be her.

Quick Update
Because I have to leave soon to go back to dog sitting.

Just wanted to let everyone know

I FINISHED!!!!!!!
Well, I reached the NaNo goal. That's not to say the story is finished. No. Still a loong way to go with it. But I'm going to turn my attentions elsewhere for a bit. Want to work on my Sweet Forever sequel.
Yippeee!!!!!!!!

Monday Meme and home for a few minutes

1. Thanksgiving is this week! Where are you going? Besides eat, what do you do on Thanksgiving? Do you have any family traditions you’d like to share with us? Don’t forget to take pictures! (You’ll be asked to show them next Monday! This will also prove handy for Coffee Chat!)
This year Thanksgiving will just be DH and two of our kids and I. Two kids will be going to other places. Usually we go to my sister in law's who puts on a big spread, but my mom is out of town this year, down in Texas with my brother, sister and their families. We'll have a belated Thanksgiving on Sunday with my in-laws (due to my m-i-l's work schedule). Don't know whether we'll have turkey or not. Maybe we'll do a pot roast. And no, don't think we'll take pictures.
2. What is your favorite gadget? Why is it your favorite? If money was not an object, what gadget would you buy for yourself?
I love my mp3 player. I listen to it at work every day (need my favorite talk radio show fix) It's not fancy, just a Sony Walkman that holds about 300 songs and has a radio. Can't afford an iPod and I don't really feel like I need one. I have a pretty basic phone. It does take pictures, but I could probably do without if I absolutely have to. If I had to have a gadget.... hmm... no, can't really think of anything that I really really really want. Maybe a new digital camera.
3. You’ve been chosen to be a contestant on “Survivor” and you leave in 6 weeks. How will you spend the next 6 weeks to prepare for the challenge?
I haven't watched the show, so I'd probably spend 6 weeks figuring out how I could get out of going. I'm not into these weird survival, eating bugs and swinging on ropes over 500 pits. I'd do much better, as another blogger says, on Biggest Loser (and I have thought about it).
4. How many times a week do you visit the ATM machine? Do you normally carry a lot of cash?
A few times a week. Usually to get lunch money for DH. No, I don't carry around a lot of cash. I dont' have a credit card, I do have a debit card and I prefer it that way. I've had issues in the past and I have no wish to go there again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm home for a little while, just til my son gets home from school. I'm very pleased with myself actually. Yesterday we spent most of the day at my mother's house since she left crack o' dawn yesterday for Texas. I came armed with only my laptop and my memory stick... which didn't work with my laptop (argh) so I got a pad of paper and started writing. Later I grabbed an older memory stick from home and typed my fingers off. I'm pleased to say I'm up to 47848 words!! Woo hoo! Only 2152 to go!!! So yesterday I wrote over 3000 words. I know I have many many many words to go before this one is finished so even if I get to 50K by tomorrow, I probably will put it aside and get back to the Sweet Forever sequel.
As always, I've been thinking of different angles for Dreamer's Sea. And I tossed around an idea which would COMPLETELY change the entire fabric of the story. Maybe the change would be too drastic and would render it unrecognizable as Dreamer's Sea. But what I thought was writing it over again... in the first person and making it more humorous. I would have to drop some of the story lines, or at least change them a bit so I lose the drama queen tone.
Would I really want to do that to a manuscript that I've put so much into? Or just write something completely different. After all, I'm planning on participating in January NaNo with some writing friends. Even though it doesn't have to be for new projects, maybe I could give it a shot.
But I have time to think about that. For now I just want to hit that 50K mark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, the whole family, except for my oldest, has done the stomach flu thing. My lucky DH got it twice. Fun for all!! I just hope my oldest doesn't get it. That would be horrible.
Nearly time to go back to my mother's house.
Yippeee.

9 Days To Go!
Can't believe we're in the home stretch! The good news is that I still believe that I'm going to reach the goal. All I'll need is my handy dandy laptop and some quiet time at my mom's house and voila! And the good news is that this story is going to run well over 50K. Now I'm not sure whether, for this challenge, the story actually has to end or if just reaching 50k is enough. I'm hoping the later though I've done both in the past. I just have way too much more left to write to make it end so soon.

I know, if someone reads the story right now there are things that won't make sense, like why does the heroine suddenly have a five year old who appears at lunch one day, or why did her infant daughter have surgery already at the beginning of the story but later she's months away from having that surgery? It's okay, things are getting dropped and picked up along the way as I see what works and what doesn't. It'll be time Nov 30th to clean that mess up.

My poor son kept me from having to go to that meeting yesterday. His belly hurt and his temp was up over 102. We had a peaceful night though, so I think he' s over the worst of it. I didn't mind missing the meeting. All it is is numbers, how the company is doing financially. I'll hear all about it later. Maybe I won't want to. I did get to go into the "city". Bought my DD #2 a new winter jacket and almost choked at the price. I've never bought myself a 119.00 jacket (on sale, down from 200.00) but it's a good name and it'll last for a long time. Why she had to get powder blue, I dont' know. It'll be in the wash a lot. Now just two more jackets to buy.

Okay, back to Nano. Yesterday, due to sick kids and trips to the city, I only got 778 words written. But currently my word count is 41369. So, that leaves 8631 words left to write. That means 959 words a day. Weekends are a little hard, but I can make it up during the week.

I still say piece o' cake!

Recipe Friday
Maybe this'll be a weekly thing. Because it's getting really cold here (won't get above freezing today) there's nothing like a good chili.

Here's a recipe I got from my father in law and cook it in a crock pot.

Ingredients:

1 lb hamburger
1 can baked beans
1 can butter beans
1 can kidney beans
2 packs medium chili mix
1 lb bacon (I like using the maple flavor) cut into small pieces
1 can diced garlic & basil tomatoes
1 sm can tomato paste
1 onion diced

Combine all beans, tomatoes and chili mix into crock pot or large pot and set temp on low. In a skillet, brown hamburger until nearly done. Add chopped onions and sliced up bacon. Cook in skillet until bacon is cooked. Drain fat (some people though think it adds flavor to the chili and leave it in). Add to the crock pot. Simmer all day, stirring occasionally.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did pretty well on writing yesterday even though it was another day of running around. Laundry this time. And I got my hair chopped. It's much shorter than I've worn it in years and years and I'm not sure I like it this short. My DH, who prefers long hair, didn't say a word. At least he didn't give me a horrified look.
Finished up the bake sale stuff with pudding. Yikes! How come four cups of milk only yields 8 small cups of pudding? Hardly worth the effort. Would've been cheaper to just go out and buy some premade pudding. And I made jello. 5 cups. Whoopie.
My day wasn't complete until my son got horribly sick. Sooo we've been up and down all night. It's going to be a really stinky day. To top it off, I have a quarterly meeting today at work. This meeting (which is just financial stuff) combined with lack of sleep is going to be bad bad bad. I just hope I don't doze off.
Starting Sunday we'll be spending a week house/dog sitting for my mom as she heads off to Texas for Thanksgiving. She doesn't have regular internet there. She has webtv. It's not even worth it. I'll be stopping at home at least once a day to check emails. But I will be bringing my laptop with me so I can get plenty of writing done. Maybe it'll be nice not having the added distraction of the internet. But I'll have the added distraction of DH.
Well, time to get ready for work. Have to drive the bake salers into school today.
BOOK TRAILER!!!!
I'm so excited!! I have my very first book trailer for Sweet Forever.
Thank you so much Marianne and Judy at Goddess Fish Promotions. I absolutely love it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In other news, yesterday was another washout of a writing day. I got a few hundred words written but most of my day was dedicated to running kids around, doing laundry and making cookies.

Did I mention how much I hate baking? And now I have to make Whoopie Pies to replace the inedible ones my SD made. Not that she did a bad job, but we discovered too late that there was a problem with the shortening. What a waste.

But I still won't worry. I'm almost to 40K and I'm feeling pretty good about finishing. Of course, I could be setting myself up for a fall.

How did it get to be 5:30am so quickly? Of course I could've gotten more writing done this morning if my DH hadn't been so chatty. Yesterday I hid out in the dark dining room, but this time he was there. Talked winter jackets and other mundane things until he wandered off to bed at nearly 5am.

So much for that hour of quiet that I so desperately need in the morning.

Now I have to get ready for work.

Oh, word count is 38615, which means 11385 words left over 12 days. 949 words per day to complete the task.
I'm still saying piece o' cake!!

Back on Track
Finally!! I actually got some writing done this morning. It meant heading for the computer instead of hanging out with DH. Usually he goes to bed around 4:30am but he was up til nearly 5am. Nooo!!! I need that time for myself. Lord only knows it's the only time I get totally to myself. Well, used to anyway. He used to get to bed before I'd wake up.

So I got several hundred words written and I plan on doing more this afternoon. I have to play catch up!

Now it's time to get ready for work. I have hair to straighten. Not mine.

A Day Of Rest
Well, not really, but it was a day away from writing anyway. Except for some notebook writing, I stayed away from NaNo yesterday.

But I did help make Whoopie Pies, chili, go to the grocery store twice (which is a long trip since we have no grocery store within 20 minutes of home) and did a Walmart run. Ca-ching. I can't believe how expensive groceries are getting! At least gas prices are going down, but still...wow. We made the executive decision to get rid of our water cooler rental and buy one of our own. We don't have good drinking water from our tap so we go for bottled but it's one expense that isn't a necessity (well, we have lots of those, but this is the easiest to give up.

So, I've lost a day, but my word count is at 37546 currently so I'm not in bad shape. 12454 words to go in 14 days. So I need to average 889 words a day. I can do that easily. Oops.... I shouldn't get cocky.

On other fronts I've been brainstorming with a friend regarding whats to be done about Dreamer's Sea. I'm planning on leaving it alone for now because just thinking of the overhaul it needs makes me want to crawl under the covers and hide. It means taking one of my secondary characters and giving him a much bigger role in the story, which also means changing his personality from cold elitist jerk to absent minded cold elitist jerk and I'm not sure that will go together.

So I'm not going to worry about it right now. I have a few minutes to write, so I'm going to make an attempt to shave off some of my average words per day.

Luckily I'm Ahead
Because I didn't get any writing done this morning. Usually I'm good for several hundred words in the morning, but my DH was still awake when I got up and in a chatty mood. Then my DS got up. An hour later they went up to bed.

Now my SD is awake. And I have to start doing dishes.

I can't win. I don't forsee today being much better with the meeting I have and dropping DD off with her dad after that.

Grrr....

But the good news is I'm up to 34065 words with only 15935 left. That's only 938 words a day until the end of the month. I'm still looking good.

As long as the kids leave me be.

Yah riiiiiiight.

Reconstruction In Order
I've been talking to friends who know a little about Dreamer's Sea and I've come to the conclusion that I need to shelf it until I can decide what I need to add to it to make it completely awesome. Not that it's not completely awesome right now, but I've decided that it's missing angst. With a few exceptions, it's a story that kind of strolls along with no twists or turns.

I came up with a few wrenches to throw into the works for my heroine and hero, but none that really grab me. I really want to avoid the whole love triangle thing. I've invested too much time to give up on the story completely, but seriously, it needs more than just a new query and synopsis. I'm sad, but I figure if it took me over twenty years to get Finally Home published then I can wait a little longer on Dreamer's Sea.

In the meantime I'm speeding through my Nano story and I have another story that's waiting for me. I have plenty of angst in both. In fact I have a bunch of angst-ridden stories that are awaiting my attention. I have no lack of wips to work on, thank goodness.

My word count thus far is 31153. Yahoo! That means 18847 words left to write in 18 days. That's only 1047 words a day. I'd love to finish it in a week.

I didn't want to... I had to....

Because it has "Dean" who is my inspiration for Matt in Where One Road Leads and "John" who's my inspiration for my NaNo hero.

Gawd they're gorgeous.

Yes yes yes, I'm in my 40's, but I can still appreciate a cute guy, can't I?

20 Days...

There are 20 days left of NaNo. I'm psyched. I really want to finish my 50k THIS week. I've got so many ideas for this story, it could go on longer, but I think when I reach my goal I'll get back to some old projects.

Well, I got shot down by Agent #2. She wasn't excited enough about the premise of my story. Gack. Okay, so I need to do a complete rewrite of my query and synopsis and try try again. It's okay. I was bummed at first, but now I lo0k at it as a challenge. Maybe I need some other stories under my belt, some other published stories under my belt first. Easier said than done. I hate to think that I worked so long on Dreamer's Sea and not have it see the light of day.

It's okay.

I was able to get lots of writing done yesterday, went over my goal of 25K even when I had to do laundry, grocery shop, oh, and DH was home sick. He got a flu shot on Thursday and immediately got the flu. Does this make sense??

Kids are home from school today for Veterans Day but I must go to work. Early if I can. It's nice to have a peaceful morning. And I don't have to do dishes. Double bonus.
Word count-26889. So that leaves 23111 words left. 1156 words per day. Hey, it's getting easier. Knock on wood.....

Borrowed from Marianne's blog:

1. Do think it’s okay to bring your own snacks into the movie theater? Why or why not?

With 4 kids I don't think I'd be able to get away with bringing THAT much snacks. I think bringing candy in would be acceptable, but not chips or popcorn. Besides I really like movie theatre popcorn.

2. If someone were following you, would you:
A. Attempt to lose them.
B. Turn around and confront them, asking them what in the heck were they doing??
C. Nothing.
D. Something else (do tell!)
Tell us about a time when you thought someone was following you. (Don’t we all have those stories? I do!)

I'd try to lose them. I'm not gutsy enough to do anything else. When I was about 14 I found myself without a ride after a school dance. I was supposed to call my brother but I had no change for the payphone (this was in the days before cells) so I thought I was going to have to walk. About 10 miles. At 11pm. I was beginning my hike when a guy was on the other side of the street. I dont know if he was actually following me, but he seemed suspicous. It freaked me out and I started to cry. He told me that he wasn't going to hurt me. He sounded drunk to me. Luckily my brother came along and took me home, berating me for not having change for the payphone. He was right.

3. What is your highest level of education? What were/are your thoughts about school? Would you ever consider going back to school? If so, for what? If not, why not?

I went to college with the intention of getting my bachelors degree in whatever (I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to do). Once I realized my college wasn't going to give me what I wanted because I didn't know what I wanted, I opted to take the credits I had and graduate with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, which about amounts to nada. I did go to a travel agents school but didn't use that either. No, I wouldn't go back again. There's no reason for me to do so, it wouldn't advance my career in any way. My life is too busy to even think of adding one more thing to it.

4. Do you order photos online? Do you print your own photos or go someplace to print them off? And do you order photographic gifts too?

I've never ordered photos online before. We have a pretty decent printer that we get pictures from. We can even take slides and negatives and get photos. Anything else I'd just drop them off at Rite Aid or somewhere like that. No, never ordered photographic gifts either.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NaNo is going well. I'm DETERMINED to reach 25K today. That would be so awesome!! I'm already up to 23645 words. I've come to a place this morning where I need to stop. I need privacy when typing it... it's one of THOSE scenes. So I'll continue it this afternoon before I have to pick up the girls from 4-H.
I'm surprised I got so much writing done yesterday. DH has the flu (he got his flu shot Friday and immediately came down with the flu. I never understood that) so he's been miserable and needy. We watched some movies but I had my notebook next to me and wrote like a fiend. I'm digging it!
It helps that I have the following inspiration.....
Onward and upward
Getting There....
Last year on this day I was only at 11K on my NaNo project. Right at this moment I'm up to 20, 389 words and I'm determined to finish this challenge! I'm liking the story and though it's rather bare bones right now I think I can fill it out to something nice. My heroine is falling for the hero slowly and I think I'll have them do something that she'll think she regrets. And I'm looking forward to introducing her jerky ex.
I nearly removed her seven month old baby from the story, but I need her (not to mention I felt guilty at the thought of getting rid of her character). But I do think the baby will need some day care.
I wish I could keep writing but I should stop to make breakfast. My DH is still in bed. He had a flu shot Thursday and immediately got the flu. Yeah, that worked well. Oldest DD is off at a cheerleading competition for the day and we're supposed to be visiting the in laws. No, I want to sit here at my desk and write another 10k.
My neighbors had a party last night. 10:30 pm there's a bunch of girls outside chatting then they went in and it was pretty loud. I feel bad for the people down below them. I could've been evil and called the cops but I didn't. Anyway, they had three cars parked out in the road all night long. They all have parking tickets now (winter parking ban in effect). That's sweet.
I'm Getting There
Up to 17103 words now and the day is young. I'm not finding it difficult to keep up the pace despite the challenges every day. Everyone seems to understand, so that helps. Marianne was commenting on her blog the other day that when her husband is home he interrupts her flow of writing. Mine does the same. I know that HE knows how important writing is to me, knows that I could have a decent future in writing, yet he still has no problem with interrupting me with the little things.
His latest is the raffle tickets. Our local paper has about 2 dozen raffle forms for turkeys. He wants me to fill them all out and then go out and drop them off at all the businesses that are participating. Doesn't he understand??? That'll take me away from my writing for too long!
Well, at least the kids understand NaNo
I've given my heroine a five year old daughter as well as her seven month old. It really works well for getting my H and h closer. Eventually I'll go back and add her in the first 10k words but for now she's just appeared at lunch one day. I've also changed my heroine's name four times. I wanted to give her a name from mythology, something really odd but something that could be shortened to make a good nickname. I came up with Arianrhod, a Welsh goddess. Or Ari for short. Should work.
Until I change my mind again.
Only 32897 words to go. 1371 per day.
I can still do this.
Ch-ch-changes
I'm thinking of making the infant in my book an older child. I think then there can be more interaction between her and my hero. So poof, Lily may going to go from 7 months to 4 years. There are ways that that won't work either, so I have to weigh my options. I thought of giving my heroine two kids, but not sure how that'll work given her relationship with Lily's father.
So far the story is going okay. I'm not loving it, but at least I can see where it's going. It's a paranormal so I have to figure out how soon I should have Viviane actually see her ghost. And I don't know if she's going to be "Oh cool, I have a ghost." of "Oh my God! I can't stay here!" I think the former. Maybe I'll have to introduce a wacky friend who has a morbid interest in the paranormal.
Yeah! That'll work!
I love unexpected brainstorming.
Anyhue, I'm up to 10722 words. That means 39278 to go. 1571 per day to go. I need a really good day of writing to get that average down.
Word Counts Etc...
I'm doing okay with my word count. Up to 9557 words. I'm not overwhelmingly in love with it, but it still has enough possibilities to keep it going.
Thank goodness the elections are over! I think eact political party should have to remove their signs by 5pm the following day. Our intersections are nothing but signs and they're just not attractive.
And that's the only thing I'll say about this election.
So, I have 40443 words to go. That's only 1556 words per day. I'm trying to do at least 2000 or more a day. I'd like to be done well before the end of the month, especially when we have a holiday coming up.
Yeah!
I'm up to 7451 at the end of my third day of NaNo. I'm pretty darned pleased.
While I'm not blown over by the story, I really like the characters and I'm drooling over my model for the hero (see Diane's blog for more of Jeffrey Dean Morgan). I have to get them in a few scenes together, but I'm about to give them one right now. Okay, so he's quite a bit older than she is, but that should be okay.
Tomorrow I may have problems maintaining my momentum. It is, after all (for those who haven't been paying attention), election day. And it's Parent/Teacher conference day. All the schools in our district are closed and having these meetings. What a joy to have to schedule 3 meetings at 2 different schools. Fun fun.
Well, I've been hearing bad things from the new neighbors. I tell ya, from how I talk people must think I live in a dive in a horrible neighborhood. I really don't. I live in a nice neighborhood. My landlord just makes bad decisions as to who he rents his units out to. We got a really nice young couple, artsy, polite, just pleasant. Apparently they haven't been too impressed with the young guys who just moved in. They live directly underneath these guys and they're very loud at any time of the day. My DH hears them tramping up and down the stairs at all hours and apparently there was an incident with a girl acting a little, um, strange (to say the least) in less than appropriate clothing.... much less, and she was outside on our front porch.
Ugh. So the nice couple are planning on moving out.
It just makes no sense.
Anyhue.... 42549 words to go on NaNo. That means I need to average 1575 per day.
Piece o' cake!
And They're Off!
Well, I did better today than I was expecting. I ended up with 2934 words. Even though I had to work, I managed to get a bunch done during breaks and when I got home from work.
So the start is a bit slow, but that can be fixed at a later date. The goal is just to write write write.
Now I have to decide if I want to sleep in tomorrow or get up early and get more done.
Only 47066 words to go!! That means at I need to average 1623 words a day to make it through.
Easy peasy.
Beautiful Wiccan Charlotte Noone has a shop for magical supplies and a goddess who's pushing her to find the man of her dreams. When Patrick Riordan, a straight-laced non-believer enters her life, Charlotte falls madly in lust with him. Despite their very different lives, neither can stop the erotic journey they’ve embarked on, but will it be enough to break through their barriers so they can accept that love itself is magical?. .
